Excavation works on the world's first third generation nuclear plant started in China

As China's first step to build the most advanced nuclear power plant in the world, the excavation work of the world's most advanced nuclear reactor started in Sanmen City in China’s eastern Zhejiang Province on 26th February 2008.
According to ZHAO Hong, engineer from the State Nuclear Power Technology Corp (SNPTC) , the No. 1 reactor in Sanmen nuclear power plant will apply the third-generation AP1000 technology transferred from the U.S.-based Westinghouse Consortium. It has never been used in any operating power plant previously.
A hole of 12 meters deep and more than 20 meters in diameter will be excavated to house the reactor. The concrete pouring is planed to start in March 2009 and the project is expected to be put into commercial operation in 2013. It is also told that before eventually self-sufficient in the AP1000 technology, the Sanmen Nuclear Power Corp. (SNPC) will install six AP1000 nuclear generating units with each a power capacity of 1.25 million kilowatts.
